About

Giovanni Pioggia graduated in Electronic Engineering, with specialization in Bioengineering, from the University of Pisa, Italy, in 1997. He received a Ph.D. degree in biomimetic robotics from University of Genoa, Italy, in 2001. He is a Researcher of the Institute of Clinical Physiology (IFC) of the Italian Council of Research (CNR). Since 1998 to 2009, he worked at the Interdepartmental Research Centre 'E. Piaggio' of the Faculty of Engineering of University of Pisa in collaboration with the Institute of Clinical Physiology. He is involved in several national and international projects. He has been a consultant researcher at the NDEAA Lab of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (Pasadena, USA) and at the University of Valladolid (Spain). From 2004 to 2006 he has been Teaching Assistant of Post-Graduate School in Biomedical Engineering. Since 2006 he is Professor of Modeling of Physiological Systems and president of the Examining Board of Modeling of Biological Systems of the Post-Graduate School in Biomedical Engineering, University of Pisa. His main topics of research are the pervasive healthcare, the modeling of physiological systems and the application of soft computing to medicine in order to develop new approach and innovative instruments to understand biological phenomena. His research activities involve unobtrusive and wearable biomedical sensors; ergonomic micro- and nano- systems; mobile and wireless communications; user interfaces; and intelligent signal processing and knowledge management. He combines the monitoring of health parameters, as physiological and cardiovascular clues, vital body signs and biochemical markers, and the patients' social and environmental context with expert biomedical knowledge to diagnose, treat or manage diseases efficiently, within the patient's preferred environment. He investigates insights on physiological processes occurring in the body by unobtrusive sensing of body fluids, transduction interfaces for signal acquisition and knowledge discovery methodologies, as well as learning algorithms based on artificial neural networks. His approach covers the recent advances in instrumentation focusing on pioneering multi-parametric real-time portable monitoring systems which would represent in perspective the cornerstone for the next generation of diagnostic devices and a real technological breakthrough. His approach is strongly multidisciplinary spanning Bioengineering, Information and Communication Technology and Life Sciences. He has been author and co-author of more than seventy publications appeared in International Journals, Books, and Proceedings of National and International Conferences. He is also co-owner of three industrial Patents. He was co-investigator in the EU projects ESPRIT INTESA (contract EP-25254), CRAFT FAIR (contract FA-98-9540), IST BIOTEX (contract 016789), and in the Italian projects MURST n. 795 Art. 10 Lex 46/1982, MURST Tecnobiochip, CNR MADESS II, ISPESL B82/DIL/02, Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Pisa 2003, PRIN 2005. He has been principal investigator in HUMABIO (ICT contract 026990), ACTIBIO (ICT contract 215372) and OASIS (ICT contract 215754) EU projects. At present he is principal investigator and WP leader for CNR in the INTERSTRESS (ICT contract 247685) EU project.
